Quilted coasters tutorial :)

Gather your supplies

Cut 8 4 ½” x 4 ½ “squares from you fabric

Cut 4 4 ½ “x 4 ½ “squares from wadding/batting

1.       Fold you fabric, so that the right/pretty sides are together

2.       Keeping the fabric folded (fold at the bottom) cut a 4 ½ “ x 4 ½ “ square

3.       Open out you cut fabric and cut in half, you should now have 2 4 ½” squares

4.       Repeat 2 and 3, 3 more times…

5.       You should now have 8 fabric squares, using your iron gently press the fabric to remove any folds or creases

6.       Lay out your wadding and cut 4 4 ½ “squares, you should have 4 wadding squares and 8 fabric squares.

7.       Take 1 square of fabric and 1 square of wadding and pin together, right side of the fabric should be facing you. ~ repeat with the other 3 squares (i only use 1 pin, but you may like to use more to help keep you fabric in place)

8.       Thread you sewing machine using you chosen cotton ~  tip make sure you nearly fill you bobbin, as you don’t want to run out whilst you sewing

9.       Take 1 of your fabrics with wadding and sew all the way around aprox 1” inwards of the edge of your fabric, using a straight stitch (this is the quilting part) remember to back-stitch after the first few stitches.

10.   Repeat for the other 3 pieces of fabric with wadding

*** at this point you could go round again, stitching a simple square  or zigzag stitch or customise in anyway you like, as this will be the front of your coaster ***

11.   remove any cotton ends and pins (if you haven’t already)

Take 1 piece of fabric and wadding square and 1 fabric ~ Pretty/ right sides together and pin in place ~ repeat for the remaining squares

12.   before sewing check that you 4 pinned squares are in this “fabric sandwich”

wadding ~ bottom

fabric (quilted) facing up ~ middle

fabric, facing down ~ top

On the right side of all 4 squares pin, using a different colour, this is a reminder of where you are NOT going to sew. This photo should make it clearer

13.   start to sew underneath the end of the pin ( so you can go around in one continuous line of sewing) ~ remember to back stitch at the start over the first couple of stitches ~ use the presser foot as a guide ~ repeat on the other fabric squares

14.   carefully trim around 3 sides of the square leaving the 1 with the opening (this makes sewing the opening closed easier)

15.   now you need to turn your fabric inside out ~ this is called “pillow case method”

Make sure you turn between the 2 pieces of fabric

Do this by using you finger and thumb!

Using the blunt end of a pencil gently push out the corners

You should have something like this

Repeat for the rest of the coasters
16.   The last thing you need to do is sew you opening together.
Gentaly push the fabric inside, so it lines up with the rest of the square

(This is a little bit fiddly, so take your time, pin the opening if you need to)

17.   Sew together using a straight stitch all the way around (as close to the edge as you can) this is to secure the opening

Trim the cotton

Repeat on the other 3 coasters

FINISHED !!
(you should have 2 rows of stitching on the front and 1 on the back, unless you decided to do anymore)
I hope you have enjoyed my first ever tutorial…
